We’ve probably all briefly ghosted a family member or two at some point. But it’s not like that with this family. This multi-generational household of ghosts gets along surprisingly well. If you’ve got all eternity before you, it’s important to find common ground and ways to keep the peace. And maybe a common enemy will serve.
Like the family with its shared mission, you too have a mission at this show–to listen, deduce, and sleuth your way to solving today’s murder (even though each character already has some blood on their own hands). You get to swap observations as you dine, chat with new friends, collaborate on lines of inquiry, and then you get to individually make your argument for your suspect. Fear not, your argument is simply noted and submitted on a slip you’ll find among your place settings.
As the ghosts surround you (sometimes literally) and as their life stories unfold, you understand what could motivate each ghost to lop off a branch on their own family tree. One for the most entertaining portions of the show is the seance. It showcases each ghost while allowing each actor to show their commitment to the comedic bit.
This is a light show–meant to be played for laughs and the acting company does just that. The playwright isn’t unpacking heady philosophies or making social commentary. But if you look, you’ll see some of that too. We get a moment to consider the treatment of women in the 17th century and why they were sometimes targeted as witches. The hollowness of celebrity and the absurdity of manipulating an audience gets treatment here too. We even have a love story for the ages, one of passion and sacrifice, but one couched in lies kept and wrongs done. Treachery on the sea, demonic possession, erotic cults, and real estate shenanigans have their part here too.
For those who get to see the show, enjoy a happy haunting, a good meal, and a chance to meet new friends, be immersed in someone else’s silly struggles for a while, and see that your family isn’t so messed up after all (compared to this lot).
