DULUTH, MN – March 22, 2025 – The Twin Ports’ shipping season officially commenced Saturday evening as the tug/barge Clyde S. VanEnkevort/Erie Trader navigated beneath the Aerial Lift Bridge into Duluth Harbor, greeted by enthusiastic onlookers at Canal Park. The vessel, having cleared the Soo Locks—opened four days earlier than the usual March 25—is now loading its first shipment of iron ore at CN, signaling the return of maritime commerce to the region.

The Port of Duluth-Superior plays a pivotal role in regional commerce. In 2024, the port handled approximately 29.6 million short tons of cargo, a 6.8% decrease from the previous year, primarily due to a decline in iron ore shipments.

Despite this, the port remains a significant economic driver, supporting over 11,500 jobs in Minnesota and Wisconsin and generating $1.5 billion in direct business revenue. The port’s activities contribute more than $545 million in wages and salaries, underscoring its vital role in the local and regional economy.

The arrival of the season’s first vessel is always a welcome sight, marking the transition from winter to the busy shipping months ahead. Welcome, Clyde, and here’s to another great season on the Great Lakes!
